A receiving center is a 24/7 community facility staffed by therapists, nursing staff, and peer counselors to provide treatment for individuals experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis. Upon arrival, individuals are assessed, stabilized, and monitored in a recliner for up to 23 hours.
Most people are stabilized within this timeframe and are then connected with a treatment program or long-term therapy services upon discharge. If someone requires more than 23 hours to stabilize, nearby stabilization beds are available for continued care.
Caseworkers at the receiving center follow up with clients for several months to ensure they are doing well and to help remove any barriers to ongoing treatment.
What services do receiving centers offer?
Receiving centers offer mental health and substance use stabilization, therapy, and case management as needed. Participants may receive a suicide assessment, physical health screening, evaluations, detox services, peer support, medication management, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
Once stabilized, individuals are connected to a community-based treatment or therapy program and discharged. The model is often compared to an urgent care facility, but specifically for mental health and substance use services.
How can I schedule an appointment or get services at a receiving center?
Receiving centers don't take appointments -- simply walk in to get services.
When are receiving centers open?
Receiving centers are open 24/7/365. You can get services at any time.
How much do receiving centers cost?
Receiving centers are 100% free to all clients.
