Public Lands and Utah’s Counties
Why Public Lands Matter
Over two-thirds of Utah’s land is federally managed, which means decisions about public lands directly impact every county in the state. From natural resource development and recreation access in rural areas, to air quality, transportation, and water supply in urban centers—public land policies touch us all.
A Statewide Issue, A Shared Responsibility
Utah’s counties are diverse. Rural counties often depend on responsible use of public lands for jobs, schools, and local services. Urban counties, while less reliant on direct land uses, are equally invested in issues like clean air, watershed protection, recreation opportunities, and sustainable growth.
That’s why UAC brings rural and urban counties together. By working collaboratively, counties can present a united voice on policies that shape Utah’s future.
What We Do
UAC’s Public Lands work is about bridging interests and finding solutions that respect the unique needs of every county. Our efforts include:
Advocacy & Representation: Ensuring County voices are heard in state and federal public land policy discussions.
Collaboration: Creating forums where rural and urban counties can share perspectives and work toward common ground.
Education: Providing data, research, and resources so county leaders and residents understand how public land policies affect them.
Partnerships: Working with state agencies, federal partners, and local stakeholders to promote balanced, practical solutions.
Why It Matters
For rural Utah, public land policies affect schools, emergency services, and local economies.
For urban Utah, public lands share recreation, air and water quality, and growth.
For all Utahns, collaboration means stronger advocacy and better outcomes for our communities.
Our Committment
UAC is committed to being the trusted space where Utah’s counties, large and small, urban and rural, can work together on the future of public lands.
